Laboratory Rules
Conditions of Use of the Computer and Networking Facilities
By using the computer and networking facilities in this department, students are agreeing to follow the few simple rules that are listed below.
The BASIC rules are as follows:
- Computers are provided and made accessible to assist you in your studies. They should never be used for downloading or playing games, music and so on.
- In using the computer laboratories, you are agreeing to abide by the laws of Western Australia and University regulations. That means you are not permitted to display offensive material or copy licensed software in any form.
- You are not allowed to eat or drink in the laboratories. If a machine is damaged because of this, the Department will deem you liable for the replacement.
- Any person entering a laboratory is required to have appropriate clothing and footware. Footware must fully enclose the foot. Thongs and partial footware is not acceptable.
- Students may not install any software applications on any Department computer.
- You are allowed to bring radios, personal CD players or the like into the laboratory. However you can only listen to them through earphones.
- Students may not attach their own peripherals to any Department computer without the express permission of the Technical Services Manager and the I.T. Specialists.
The Department has an obligation to ensure copyright provisions and other legal conditions are met. Note that all laboratories are under video supervision and all the web sites that you access are logged.
Anyone found misusing and/or abusing these facilities would have his or her access REMOVED.
If there are any problems, please call extension 7906 or e-mail the help desk at helpdesk@ece.curtin.edu.au.
Conditions of Use of the General Laboratories
The Department requires that laboratories be conducted in an orderly manner with due concern for the safety of all. Safety is particularly important given that most laboratories employ high voltages, and because they are laboratories, there is a greater exposure to danger than in other situations. The laboratory rules reflect that.
The General Laboratory Rules are as follows:
- Students are expected to act responsibly in all laboratories at all times.
- Any person entering a laboratory is required to have appropriate clothing and footware. Footware must fully enclose the foot. Thongs and partial footware is not acceptable.
- No food or beverages are permitted in any laboratory.
- Under University policy, smoking is not permitted in any building.
- Students may not enter a laboratory if they are affected by alcohol or drugs.
- Cases and bags are not to be placed below any benches.
- Students are not permitted to stand or sit on benches, or employ them for any other purpose than conducting the appropriate test.
- Students may not bring personal equipment to a laboratory outside of calculators and the like without the express permission of the Technical Services Manager.
- Students may not use any laboratory for private purposes.
- Soldering is not permitted in general laboratories. It is restricted to project laboratories and some specific laboratories designated by the Department for construction purposes from time to time.
- Students are not permitted to attempt repair, calibrate or modify any equipment in a laboratory at any time. They should either seek the assistance of the laboratory supervisor to bring the problem to the attention of the technical staff, or fill in a laboratory fault report.
- Students may not move equipment - including chairs - from one laboratory area to another without the permission of the technical staff.
- Students may not open the windows of any air-conditioned laboratory or leave the doors of a keyed entry laboratory open at any time.
For Experimental Laboratories used by project students for example, the rules are as follows:
- Students may not enter the laboratory until the Supervisor is present.
- All circuits must be checked by the laboratory supervisor before power is applied.
- No circuit is to be left unattended while powered. If it is necessary to absent a laboratory, then students should remove power.
- Instruments should be set to their highest range, then power applied and the instrument adjusted down as measurements are taken.
- On completion of a laboratory, students should remove power then disconnect all wiring and return it to the drawers, and remove all cables and return them to their racks.
